In June 2019 we began renovations on the Shopfront building. We are building fresh new spaces for our Young People to spend time and create art in. Here we answer your frequently asked questions and notify you of a few changes to be aware of while the building is finished.
WHY ARE WE BUILDING?
We are expanding our beautiful building with a new state-of-the-art performance space and office space to locate 6 additional community youth and arts organisations. Our goal is to become NSW’s Premier Youth Arts Facility and support an additional 1160 Young People in the first year. The new building will incorporate a new workshop, performance and rehearsal space, a recording studio, improved foyer areas and heating, and an exhibition space.
RENOVATION DATES
Renovations began in June 2019 and are expected to be complete by January 2020.
WORKSHOPS AND PERFORMANCES
Construction is only taking place within the buildings on Carlton Parade so we still have full use of the theatre and studio space located on High Street. All workshops and performances will remain on-site at this stage, and we are working with the builders to ensure that operations are not affected by the construction. However if the need arises to move location for any period, plenty of notice will be given and the move will be to a similarly accessible venue nearby with easy access to public transport. If you are coming to Shopfront for workshops or an event you will need to enter via the theatre doors at 2 High Street. To ensure everyone remains safe, there is absolutely no access to the construction site at 86 – 88 Carlton Pde, and all access from the construction site to the theatre and studio has been sealed off.
SPACE HIRE
The theatre and studio spaces will still be available for hire, however availability will be extra tight, so get in quickly!
OFFICE STAFF
Our recording studio space at the rear of the theatre has been converted into a temporary office, so you will always be able to find a friendly and familiar Shopfront face in the building. The main Shopfront office will relocate to 23 – 29 Treacy Street in Hurstville for the duration of the renovation. Our phone number remains unchanged, (02) 9588 3948.
TOILETS
Shopfront is maintaining access to the toilet block at the rear of the
premises during the construction period while the inside toilets are unavailable. These toilets will be signposted throughout the spaces. The bathrooms and walkway to them are well lit. There is an accessible toilet in the block.
WILL IT BE DANGEROUS?
No. The building site will be completely separate from where Shopfront workshops and performances are on-site. Any areas that are out of bounds have been locked off.
