Hayden Tonazzi

Teaching Artist

Hayden Tonazzi (they/he) is a theatre and musical theatre director, and creative producer based in Gadigal. A graduate of the NIDA MFA Directing program, this year they commence their appointment as Artistic Associate with the Australian Theatre for Young People (ATYP), after being an Associate Artist at the Kings Cross Theatre (KXT). As a creative, they have a significant focus on new Australian writing and visualizing dramaturgy through design and performance in pursuit of imagery that prioritizes an audience’s understanding of character and story.

As Director, their play credits include Shack by George Kemp for ATYP, Tell Me Before The Sun Explodes by Jacob Parker for KXT, the Australian Premiere of Significant Other by Joshua Harmon for The New Theatre, This Genuine Moment by Jacob Parker for La Mama & The Old 505. Their musical theatre credits include Miracle City by Nick Enright for NIDA, Carrie: The Musical for The Depot Theatre, Parade at The Seymour Centre, and The Hatpin at The King Street Theatre. This year they will be directing a new youth-devised work titled Stop. Drop. And Listen. for Shopfront Arts and the new Australia play, The Last Train To Madeline by Callum Mackay for Fever103. This year they will also be Associate Director on CAMP for the Seymour Centre (dir. Kate Gaul), and the national tour of CUSP for ATYP (dir. Fraser Corfield).

As Assistant Director, their credits include the national tour of Follow Me Home by Lewis Traston for ATYP (dir. Fraser Corfield), Heroes Of The Fourth Turning for OutHouse Theatre Co (dir. Craig Baldwin), The End of Winter by Noëlle Janaczewska for Siren Theatre Co (dir. Kate Gaul), 21 Forster St for Steps & Holes Theatre (dir. Kate Walder), and Starstruck: The Stage Musical for RGM Productions (dir. Kim Hardwick).

Their Directorial Placements include Moulin Rouge for Global Creatures (Associate Dir. Jacinta John), Handa Opera On The Harbour: La Traviata for Opera Australia (dir. Constantine Costi), and The Bridges Of Madison County for The Hayes Theatre (dir. Neil Gooding).

As a creative producer, Hayden has worked across many independent productions in Gadigal and Naarm. Their credits include the 2023 Lysicrates Prize, the 2022 Martin-Lysicrates Prize, the 2022 State of the Sector Adress for Theatre Network NSW (TNN), and 21 Forster St for Steps & Holes Theatre.
